A Day In My Life

I got the call when I was on vacation. And I had the flu.

It didn’t feel like I’d have enough time to prep – and I’d have to travel.

I hadn’t done anything like it before.

My inner critic was deafeningly loud.

My imposter syndrome was at an all-time high.

My husband was traveling those same days.

What would we do with the kids?

An exciting business opportunity had presented itself. It was also just three weeks away. While I’d have the chance to coach a team of incredible leaders at their annual retreat, I’d also have to travel for a few days. And they wanted some unconventional components. Frankly, I was scared. I’d even convinced myself perhaps they meant to call some other Shayna Bergman.

It would have been so much easier to say no. But despite all the obstacles, saying YES to this opportunity perfectly aligned with who I am and what I want. A room full of leaders, many of whom are parents, looking to redefine their version of success to have less stress and create less stress in their business and for their people? How could I turn this down?

My kids would be fine without me and my husband for a few days. In fact, they’d likely have a blast! My sister-in-law subbed in (thank you!). I put in extra effort on top of my regular clients, workshops, trainings, and content creation to create an amazing leadership retreat over those next few weeks. My husband and I told our kids that it would feel a little extra cuckoo between Dad’s travels and work commitments and Mom’s travels and scary but exciting opportunity. Granted, we were really only gone for 2.5 days but those 2.5 days took a lot of coordination.

And this? This is why balance is bullshit. I intentionally create a work/life blend – some days it’s blissfully easy. Others, it’s a little harder.

Many of you have emailed recently asking how I make it all work and don’t get too stressed.

Here’s how:

1. I say yes to hard things. I can do hard things!

2. I ask for help. Help isn’t just a four-letter word. It truly takes a village.

3. Mom-guilt begone. My kids will survive without us for a few days, and it’s good for them, and us!

4. I quieted my inner critic. They called me, and I wasn’t going to pass it up.

I hope sharing one of my stories inspires you to say yes to opportunities that align with what you care deeply about. I hope that you find the ability to quiet your inner critic. And I hope that you can design a unique work/life blend that works for you.
