I know you’re successful. If you weren’t, you wouldn’t be here. You wouldn’t be reading this. You wouldn’t be in my world.
But here’s the real question: Are you successful because you’re in your Zone of Excellence? Or are you thriving in your Zone of Genius? There’s a difference, and it’s a big one.
How You Know the Difference
I’m an HR expert. I spent years—YEARS—studying HR. Worked for one of the top HR companies in the world. Led one of its highest revenue-generating businesses. Built an entire HR department from the ground up. Taught HR. Got certified. Won awards. If there were an HR Olympics, I’d have some serious gold medals.
And you know what? I was damn good at it. That was my Zone of Excellence.
But did I love it? Not really. I liked it. A lot. But love? Nope.
You know what I do love? Watching people transform before my eyes. Seeing them shift their mindset and suddenly unlock possibilities they never imagined. Watching them take real action that changes not just their careers but their teams, their families, their communities. That? That’s my Zone of Genius. It’s effortless (not really, but you get the point). It’s exhilarating. It’s FUN.
Why It Matters
Your Zone of Excellence is where you do great work, where you get praise, recognition, and results. And guess who benefits the most? Everyone else.
Your Zone of Genius is where YOU benefit—and because you’re thriving, so does everyone around you. It energizes you. Inspires you. You could do it all day, every day, and still want more.
So, how do you start spending more time in your Zone of Genius? Ask yourself:
- What energizes me effortlessly?
- What feels more like play than work?
- What makes me lose track of time, yet leaves me feeling fulfilled, not drained?
- How can I intentionally do more of that?
The difference between being great and being alive? Like your kids, it’s all about where you choose to play.
So, where are you playing?
