Embracing Imperfect Action

Do you find yourself delaying tasks because you’re aiming for perfection? Ever catch yourself thinking, “If I can’t do it perfectly, why bother at all”?

As a recovering perfectionist, I used to make excuses and procrastinate because I feared doing things “wrong”. Sound familiar?

I see this pattern in some of my clients, too. They’re paralyzed by the fear of making mistakes, facing judgment, or disappointing themselves. They obsess over how to do things “right”, getting stuck before even starting.

But luck rarely hands us what we want on a silver platter. The things that excite us, despite the fear, happen on the other side of action.

Remember, imperfect action is still action!

Imperfect action is movement. It’s progress. It’s what propels you closer to your goals.

Babies learning to walk don’t give up after falling down. They don’t say to themselves, “If I can’t get this walking thing down immediately, I’m giving up.”  They keep trying until they succeed. They take imperfect action, one wobbly step at a time.

So, channel your inner baby and take those steps towards your goals.

Here are three ways to stop waiting and start moving:

  • Break it down: Turn big goals into small daily tasks. Watch as these small wins accumulate over time.
  • Check in: We’re already wired to look at what’s not working. Don’t forget to also look at what IS working.
  • Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good: Just start. Adapt as you go. Embrace a growth mindset.

I’m writing after watching my kids play. My son’s paper airplanes are far from perfect, but he keeps making them, each one a little closer to flying just right. My daughter’s drawings may have stray lines, but she’s turning them into something beautiful. They’re both having fun, pushing their limits with smiles on their faces.

So, channel your inner kid and get after it.
