How to Stop Overthinking

My husband has this habit of checking the weather app to see what’s going on outside. And I mean checking it. It could literally be pouring rain, but there he is, staring at his phone like the app knows more than, oh, I don’t know—his own eyeballs! I’ll tease him with a little, “Hey hon, have you considered looking or even stepping outside?”

But honestly, aren’t we all a little guilty of that?

I’ve written before about taking imperfect action. Well, guess what? We’re going deeper.

You’re spending SO much time spinning ideas around in your head. Ruminating, imagining, planning for every possible scenario like you’ve got a crystal ball. What-ifs. Why-nots. Excuses. All the mental gymnastics to avoid doing something.

Look, I’m a recovering perfectionist, so I totally get it. Been there, overthought that. And I’m also a parent and a former corporate leader, so trust me—I HAVE worn those shoes.

The ones filled with the fear of making the wrong move, saying the wrong thing, or feeling that gut-wrenching regret.

But here’s the deal: the answers you’re so desperately seeking? They don’t come from endless thinking. They come from doing.

Most people think they need to know exactly where they’re going before they even take a step. Spoiler alert: you don’t. The path ahead isn’t a maze you have to solve in your mind before setting foot on it. All that matters is that you take any step that feels right, right now. And then? Take another. Then another.

Notice the opportunities that pop up along the way. If something piques your interest, lean into it! Feel it out. If it lights you up, guess what? You’re on the right track. Keep moving! If it feels off, that’s not failure—that’s data. You’re just gathering the info you need to tweak your course. No biggie.

But staying where you are? That’s called being stuck. And nobody ever found clarity by sitting in the same spot.

So, rather than trying to predict the weather from your app (or, you know, overthinking every decision into oblivion), step outside and see how it feels. If you’re dressed for the occasion? Fantastic, keep going! If you need to step back in and grab a jacket? Do that—and get right back out there. The world is waiting.
