If You Always Feel Behind, Try This

You probably have a to-do list (or several, if you’re like me!) somewhere within arm’s reach right now.

Maybe it’s in your notes app. Maybe it’s several scraps of paper laying around your house. Maybe it lives in your brain and comes out in the shower where you yell to your spouse “can you text me these various things asap before I forget?” – also me.

You’re good at this. You get a lot done. You check boxes. You move things forward. From the outside, it looks like you’re on top of it all.

So why does it still feel like you’re behind?

This is the part no one talks about. The to-do list is designed to keep you focused on what hasn’t happened yet. It’s always pointing to the gap. What’s left. What’s still undone. What you didn’t get to.

So even on a day where you handled a tough conversation, showed up for your team, made decisions, managed a household, and kept small humans alive and relatively happy, your brain goes straight to the three things you didn’t cross off.

Enter the Ta-Da list!

I wish I invented this but I didn’t. I use it all the time with clients because it works.

A Ta-Da list is exactly what it sounds like. A running list of what you DID. Not the big, flashy wins you’d put on a performance review (although sometimes, yes!). The real stuff. The meeting you led when you were exhausted. The boundary you held even though it felt uncomfortable. The email you finally sent. The moment you paused instead of snapping.

The things that actually require leadership.

You are doing a lot more than you give yourself credit for. But you move so fast that you don’t register any of it. You finish one thing and immediately reach for the next.

No pause. No acknowledgment. No evidence that you’re actually making progress.

And then you wonder why it feels like it’s never enough.

Your brain needs proof, but not the kind that comes once a year in a review cycle. Daily proof that you are showing up, making decisions, and moving things forward in a way that aligns with who you want to be.

A Ta-Da list gives you that.

It allows you to see your day as it actually happened instead of through the narrow lens of what didn’t get done.

Try this for a week.

At the end of the day, before you close your laptop or collapse into bed, write down five things you did. They can be small. They can be messy. They can be things no one else saw.

Especially those.

You’ll still have a to-do list. You’re not getting rid of it. You have responsibilities, goals, people counting on you.

But you also get to recognize that you’re already leading. Already showing up. Already doing more than your brain is giving you credit for.
