Everyone’s chasing “work-life balance” like it’s a finish line.
But here’s the truth: most of us wouldn’t even know what to do with it if we got there.
We say we want balance, but if I handed you an extra five hours this week, what would you actually do with them? Scroll less? Sleep more? Or would those hours just get swallowed up by the same habits, the same noise, the same guilt?
Because the problem isn’t usually that we’re working too much.
It’s that we’ve forgotten what we’re working for.
Here’s what I know:
I’m super busy. Anyone who knows me knows that.
But I’m also super intentional about how I spend my time and with whom.
I don’t choose things that drain me. I choose things that fuel me.
I love my work, and I do a lot of it – but it feels like play. It energizes me.
And some days, I schedule absolutely nothing. I block off time so I can do what I want, when I want: take a long nap, walk the dog, grab the kids early and hit the park, meet a friend for a lingering coffee, or volunteer at school.
That’s what balance looks like for me. It’s not a perfect equation but rather a series of choices that make my life feel rich.
Because balance isn’t about doing less.
It’s about being intentional with what fills your time – and your energy.
So instead of asking, “How can I work less?” try asking:
“What would it look like to live more?”
Because “balance” isn’t something you find. It’s something you create, one intentional choice at a time.
