You’ve wanted it for a while. A more fulfilling career experience. More presence at home. A life that doesn’t feel like you’re constantly one step behind. You’ve thought about it. Talked about it. Maybe even Googled it at 11pm when the house finally got quiet.
And still, nothing has changed.
We like to blame these challenges on time. It’s not about time. It’s also not a lack of motivation. It’s a mindset problem, and until you deal with it, no strategy in the world is going to stick.
I know this because I lived it. I knew I wanted to be a coach since I was a kid. In college, I was literally jotting down ideas for what my business would look like. I had the vision, the drive, the credentials, and I spent more than 20 years not doing it. I could have made it happen. But my head wasn’t in it. I convinced myself that my successful-looking resume and titles were enough. It wasn’t until I worked with my own coach that I finally understood what was actually keeping me stuck: the beliefs I was carrying about what I was capable of, what I deserved, what was “realistic” for me. The day I launched wasn’t the day my schedule finally cleared up and I felt ready. HA! Nope! It was the day my mindset caught up!
The research backs this feeling up – the gap between wanting to change and actually changing has nothing to do with willpower and everything to do with a gap in your beliefs.
The beliefs we hold about our own abilities shape EVERYTHING: how we act, how we respond to setbacks, whether we take the leap or stay put. When those beliefs are rooted in old stories and self-doubt, we stall. We plan. We wait for the “right time”. If we keep waiting for “the right time”, we’ll be waiting forever.
If you’re a parent in a leadership role, you’re already carrying a heavy load. And yet, getting honest about your assumptions, your values, the voice in your head that says you can’t…THAT’S what makes everything else actually work!
