What Your Employees Aren’t Telling You

As a coach working with leaders who also happen to be parents, let me spill some tea (as my 9-year old daughter would say). Your employees are talking—just not to you. The stuff they’re whispering to each other when you’re not around? It’s not always complaints. Sometimes, it’s quiet cries for acknowledgment, clarity, or just a smidge of humanity.

I’ve heard it all in my coaching sessions, so here’s the lowdown:

“Where are we going, and why should I care?”
Your team wants direction. No one likes aimlessly grinding away without knowing how their work fits into the bigger picture. Spell it out. Connect the dots. Give them a reason to care. You’re already a pro at this when you’re explaining to your kids why bedtime is non-negotiable—do the same for your team.

“Can someone notice what I bring to the table?”
A pat on the back isn’t going to cut it. Employees want real, specific acknowledgment. Not “Good job,” but “Your idea cut two weeks off our timeline” kind of recognition. You cheer your kids on for landing a cartwheel—how about hyping up your team’s wins with the same energy? And for many, money still talks.

“I’d rather stay quiet than risk it.”
Fear of judgment keeps ideas locked away. Create an environment where people feel safe enough to speak up. Think about the way you encourage your kids to share their wildest, weirdest dreams. Bring that vibe to your workplace.

“I’m drowning over here, but I’ll fake a smile.”
Burnout doesn’t always look like exhaustion. Sometimes, it’s a silent overachiever working twice as hard to hide their struggle. Sound familiar? (Hello, parenting!) Check in with your team regularly. Ask, “How are you, really?” Then actually listen.

“I’m watching how you live your life.”
Your actions set the tone. If you’re answering emails at midnight or bragging about skipping lunch, guess what? Your team thinks that’s the standard. Model boundaries and self-care—the same stuff you try to teach your kids.

Here’s the truth: when employees feel seen, heard, and valued, they show up differently. Productivity goes up, stress goes down, and suddenly, everyone’s winning.

The cherry on top? The same skills you use to lead your team can make you a better parent. And the lessons you learn at home can make you a better leader. It’s all connected.

So, what aren’t your employees telling you? And what are you going to do about it?
