Work Is Not the Most Interesting Thing About You

I say this with love: Your job is not your personality.

Somewhere along the way—probably around the first time someone asked, “So, what do you do?”— many of us started equating our careers with our identity. We became lawyers, consultants, VPs, founders, managers. Not people who do those things. People who are those things.

And that would be fine… if work was always stable. If jobs didn’t shift, pivot, or flat-out disappear. If we didn’t change as humans.

If parenting didn’t come in and lovingly turn your life upside down.

But you know what happens when your identity is built entirely around your work? Any change at work feels existential. A promotion feels like validation. A layoff feels like failure. Even the desire to make a change—because you’re bored or misaligned or just done—feels like a betrayal of self. No wonder so many high achievers stay stuck.

I support parents in leadership roles—and I’ve seen firsthand how easy it is to give so much to your career that there’s little energy left for anything else. Work becomes your default identity. Because it’s visible. It’s rewarded. It’s where you still feel competent when the rest of your life is chaos.

Let me tell you this: You’re more than your job title. The ones who do this well? They lead big teams and they paint watercolors. They present to the board and train for marathons. They close deals and geek out with their kids over Taylor Swift theories (yes, I see you). They’re not less committed to their work—they just remember it’s not the whole damn story.

Having a life outside of work doesn’t make you less driven. It makes you whole. It makes you resilient. It teaches your kids what real success looks like—one that’s defined by values, not just output.

And it reminds you that no title, no company, no paycheck defines your worth.

So if you’ve been craving change, or feeling stuck, or even just wondering “Is this all there is?”—I invite you to zoom out. Get curious about what lights you up that has nothing to do with your LinkedIn bio. You might just remember who you were before your job became your name tag.

Work is a part of you. But it is not you.

And thank goodness for that.
