Your Body Is Sending You a Bill – And It’s Time to Pay It

Here’s a stat that should stop you cold (it stopped me in my tracks!): the World Health Organization has called stress “the health epidemic of the 21st century” – and research widely cited in public health circles estimates that up to 80% of illness is caused directly or indirectly by it. 80%!!! A peer-reviewed study in EXCLI Journal confirms stress is both a trigger AND an aggravating factor across your cardiovascular, immune, hormonal, and digestive systems. All of it.

If you’re a parent in a leadership role, your week looks like this: you manage a small person’s emotions before 8am, then walk into work and manage adults all day – their deadlines, their dynamics, their feelings. Then you come home and do it again. Two full-time jobs and no clock-out time. Ever.

That sustained, low-grade, never-really-ends stress keeps cortisol elevated and when cortisol is chronically high, your body pays. We’re talking cardiovascular disease, weakened immunity, anxiety, depression. I’m not a wellness influencer selling you a crystal. This is biology.

Here’s the part nobody told you: managing your stress IS managing your performance. Chronic stress takes your prefrontal cortex (the part responsible for decision-making, empathy, and clear communication) offline. You become reactive instead of intentional. You snap at your kids. You’re short with your team. You feel like you’re failing everywhere, which creates more stress. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and I don’t mean to sound like a motivational poster. It’s simply neuroscience.

So what does stress relief actually look like for someone like you? Not a bath. Not a 30-day challenge.

Three things to start with: protect your transitions (five minutes between work-mode and parent-mode – sit in your car, walk around the block), guard your sleep like it’s a business asset because it literally is, and ask for support out loud. Parent leaders are often everyone else’s support system. That means yours can get dangerously thin.

When you manage your stress, you’re not being soft. You’re making a deliberate investment in your capacity to lead at work and at home. Your team needs the version of you that isn’t running on fumes. Your kids need the version of you that’s actually in the room.

Ready to stop running on empty? Let’s talk. I work specifically with parents in leadership roles who are done white-knuckling their way through the week.
